Following the Proletarian Revolution of Valourium, there was an intense debate in the National Workers' Congress concerning the establishment of a military. Seeing a standing army as an inherent threat to liberty, there was fierce opposition to the establishment of anything more than a large network of reserve forces which would be activated in the event of an invasion. However, the imminent threat posed by nations hostile to Socialism as well as the advice of the officers of the Royal Army convinced the body to adopt in the Permanent Defense Directive a small but elite force which would be called the Crimson Guard. It would serve as a comprehensive defense force for the fledgling Union and be bolstered by reserves in the event of an invasion.
