The foreign relations of Meriad are based around the country's neutrality, particularly in terms of the ongoing tensions between the Greater Ordic Union and the Ordic Communist Union. The foreign relations of Meriad are overseen and exercised by the Meriadni Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Elements of Policy

Since the end of the First Endwar, Meriad has adhered to a strictly neutral model on foreign policy, with special weight placed on the country's neutral arbitration of international disputes. This is directly due to the country's small population and, similarly, the limited military power that it can exercise. This policy was extremely effective during the Second Endwar, during which Meriad successfully remained neutral despite the extreme proximity of Kolintha, one of the most important belligerents in the conflict. In the intervening time, especially with the advent of the Ordic Cold War, Meriad's policy of absolute neutrality has been extremely effective. The country has strong economic ties with countries on both sides of the conflict, and remains a neutral forum for debate over the possibility of resolving the ideological tensions between the alliances. Unfortunately, recent proxy-wars between the member-states of both alliances have placed this delicate balancing act in danger. This is clearly evidenced by the ongoing Virnessr Affair, in which Meriad itself is the battleground between the alliances.

Notes
Template:Country data Kolintha Favorable Kolintha and Meriad maintain generally favorable relations, despite historically-motivated misgivings held by the Meriadni people as a result of Kolish aggression during the Second Endwar.
 New Spanishland Neutral
Nerotysia Favorable Despite ideological differences, the Meriadni and Nerotysian governments generally agree on humanitarian grounds, and have partnered in such agreements as the Fyrtárn Accords and legislation in the Ordic League.
Khornera Poor While the two countries maintain diplomatic relations, their interaction has essentially been limited to trade. The Meriadni government issues frequent objections to the Khorneran political system and human rights record. In return, the Holy Khorneran Empire has at times expressed objections at Meriadni entanglements with communist countries such as Nerotysia and Gran Altiplano.
File:Faldarun.png Faldarun Favorable The Meriadni government was one of the first states to formally open relations with the government of the Faldarunic confederation in 1917, and maintains close economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties with the Faldarunic government through the Nordic Congress.
Gran Altiplano Favorable The Meriadni government first recognized the Altiplanero government in 1981, several years after the 1977 March Revolution brought about a communist republic system of government. Neither formal bilateral relations nor embassies were not opened until 1985 as a result of military posturing and general disapproval of the Altiplanero government by Kolintha. Since 2008, which brought about major constitutional reforms in Gran Altiplano, the countries have developed relatively favorable relations, and economic connections formed in the intervening time period have strengthened. King Sketli made a state visit to Gran Altiplano in 2012.

File:Flag of Allidron.png Allidron Neutral While their political systems are very different, the geographic proximity between Allidron and Meriad, as well as Allidron's high oil consumption, make the countries valuable trading partners. In 2014, 69% of Meriad's petroleum exports were sold to Allidronian entities, representing the largest amount of oil exported to a foreign nation since 1991. Meriad frequently adjusts petroleum export tariffs in response to Allidronian policies, and has historically used taxes on petroleum exports and price adjustment as means of reacting to Allidronian internal politics.
File:Daeflag.png Daeseong Favorable Meriad and Daeseong have favorable relations, due in part to their comparable political ideologies. Meriad is the smallest 'peerage state' recognized by the Dae government under the Kyutpeng system by population, and both countries maintain diplomatic missions in each others' capitals.

International Agreements

Meriad is a state party to numerous international agreements, including the Charter of the Ordic League, nearly every piece of OL legislation, as well as numerous other bilateral and multilateral treaties.
