Early life
Hanzawa was born in Inaba, Danbara on 14 October 1973. His father, plastic screw manufacturer Hanzawa Shinnosuke, committed suicide when Hanzawa was 15 years old after his factory had to shut down. Hanzawa was thereafter raised by his mother Hanzawa Michiko. He subsequently received a bachelor's degree in economics at the Niihama Technological University.
Hanzawa eventually joined the Central Industrial Bank prior to its merger with the First Heian Bank, which formed Central Heian Banking Corporation, the third-largest bank in Yamatai after Mikogi Bank and Shinomiya-Sukimoto Banking Corporation Group. As the chief of the Loans Division at the Chuo branch in Niihama, Hanzawa uncovered and independently investigated a far-reaching corruption scandal. He was later promoted to Deputy Director of the Corporate Loans Division at the Heian headquarters of CHBC. While at CHBC HQ, Hanzawa again became a whistleblower, exposing a tax fraud scheme that implicated two of the bank's executive directors. Shortly after this, however, he was transferred to Okayama as Director of Sales for a small securities firm.
After this, Hanzawa quit his job and attained a master's degree in political science at the National University of Yamatai in 2012.
Political career
Hanzawa joined the government of Danbara Province in April 2013. He was elected to the Teikoku Gikai in August 2014 from Danbara Province's 3rd District, running on a platform of fighting corruption and revitalising small businesses. He served as Gikai Secretary for Culture and Communications from 2014 to 2015. In October 2015, he was appointed Vice-Minister for Finance.
Yamamoto Hanako appointed Hanzawa as the Minister of Finance on 24 September 2019.
