The "Hymn of March" (Spanish: Himno de Marzo) is the name of the official national anthem of Gran Altiplano. The melody was first composed as a naval march in 1893 in Catamarca by a retired officer turned Romantic composer, Federico Valles Constanza. The original march, "Libertad", celebrated the victory of the Catamarqueño Second Fleet over the Hyspanic Navy during the Catamarqueño War of Independence in 1875. It remained in the repertoire of military bands in both Catamarca and Averillas through the middle of the twentieth century at least.

The poem that would be set to the tune originated while its author, Miguel Ángel García, was imprisoned in the infamous island prison El Rincón in the harbour off of Puerto Real as a result of the spring 1976 strikes. A factory worker himself, the poem was quickly triumphed amongst members of the FOC and posted as effective propaganda in Puerto Real and Tarancón. The tune was set to music in the fall of that year, and became in that country the most popular anthem of revolution. As events progressed, it became a similar rallying cry in Averillas, where the conflict remained protracted.

The anthem was formally adopted in Akylaren in Altiplano in September of 1979, having been nominated as such in several issues of La Vanguardia over the summer.

Lyrics

Himno de Marzo Hymn of March

From the peaks, the heights of the east

Unto the calm estuaries of the south

A whisper brought us together in hope

A whisper by the name of revolution.

We feared the black fist of the State

Which consigned us to be silent and suffer

We feel the wind, cool and welcome

Through the window of the dark Rincón

Look to the fore, raise your gaze!

The horizon brightens with the rising of the sun!

The night behind us, we’ve become comrades

Together we are one, and each has a role.

Now we break the chains of fear

No force can block us

We have realised that we are powerful

And we know there is everything to gain.

The cell opened, the morning opened

Liberty is calling us forwards

No more shall we speak with fearful voices

The time has come: stand and fight!

Look to the fore, raise your gaze!

The horizon brightens with the rising of the sun!

The night behind us, we’ve become comrades

Together we are one, and each has a role.

Brothers and sisters, what are you waiting for?

Some miracle or act of the King?

It’s better to raise arms and sing:

The streets will ring with out voices.

Today it matters not who you are or from where

Today, of course, we have everything in common.

Above us– Heaven, before us– the future

That Áviles and his Party shall bring us soon.

Look to the fore, raise your gaze!

The horizon brightens with the rising of the sun!

The night behind us, we’ve become comrades

Together we are one, and each has a role.

The path to equality is difficult

We must recognise this fact.

But our variety and our gifts

Support us and will aid us.

In the interest of forgetting our conflicts

And everything that could hinder us

We confederate: our five are now one

United and happy in our country.

Look to the fore, raise your gaze!

The horizon brightens with the rising of the sun!

The night behind us, we’ve become comrades

Together we are one, and each has a role.

Together we are one, and each has a role.
