Not to be confused with Mikawa, Yamashiro, a rural city in Yamashiro Province, Yamatai.
Mikawa (三河市) is the capital of Hinomoto, a Self-Governing Region of Yamatai. Along with Shin Mikawa, Mikawa City is part of the Mikawa Metropolitan Area, and it is the largest city in Hinomoto in terms of population, with a population of 1,956,207 people.
The traditional seat of power in Hinomoto since the 12th century, for much of Hinoan history Mikawa was the seat of the Taikun, the military dictator at the head of Hinomoto's feudal system. After the unification with Yamatai, Mikawa experienced a dramatic expansion and became a vital port city with key industries such as manufacturing, steel-making, oil refining, and shipbuilding.

History
The area around present-day Mikawa has been settled since prehistoric times, and archaeological evidence indicates that the area had a high population density in the Dogū period.
The area became a part of the Ashigarashimo District of Sagami Province during the Jōto period. During the Michishige Shogunate, Mikawa developed as a castle town and capital of the domains of the Harada Clan, which covered most of the Kansai Region. Following the fall of the Michishige and the ensuing Kichū Wars (己丑) in 1510, the Harada were defeated by Ikuta Narihide in the Battle of Mikawa, despite the impregnable reputation of Mikawa Castle. The territory came under the control of the Ikuta Clan, loyal allies of the Fukumura Clan which were unifying Hinomoto under Fukumura Michikazu.
Following a marriage between Fukumura Michikazu's son Fukumura Mochimune, and Ikuta Narihide's daughter Ikuta Nanami, the Ikuta Clan merged with the Fukumura Clan. Under the Fukumura Shogunate, Mikawa became the site of the Fukumura Bakufu, and thus became the capital of Hinomoto. Mikawa would remain the capital of Hinomoto for centuries to come.
During the communist era, the capital was moved to Nakayama, after which it was briefly moved to the planned city of Akakiri.
