My Classmate Is A Dictator (同級生は独裁者です; dōkyūsei wa dokusai-shadesu), also shortened as DokyuDoku, is a Yamataian light novel series written by the pseudonymous author Hankyu, with illustrations provided by Mukai Mieko. The series follows a high school boy named Abeno Shinzo, whose classmate turns out to be the heir, and later the official ruling dictator, of a minor Central Escaric dictatorship. As their friendship grows, Abeno has to increasingly deal with various political situations and misfortunes that turn his formerly ordinary life upside down.

Shuumatsu Shubbansha has published 17 volumes in the series from August 2008 to September 2021. A manga adaptation drawn by Mukai Mieko was serialised in Shuumatsu Retsujo Magazine between 2009 and 2011. A 12-episode douga adaptation by Kobayashi Animation aired in Yamatai between October 4 and December 19 in 2014. A second douga season, My Classmate Has A Nuclear Weapon, aired between January and March 2016. An animated film featuring a new story, My Classmate is the Prime Minister, was released in 2019.

Three visual novel video games were also developed from 2011 to 2013 for personal computers and some consoles.

Plot

Abeno Shinzo is an ordinary 17-year-old junior college student in Kanazawa, Satsuma, who is an avid fan of military hardware and Yamataian history. He attends school with his best friend Suga Yoshimoto, an aspiring politician and sportsman, and his neighbour and childhood friend Koike Yukino, a member of the student council. A mysterious an attractive foreign transfer student named Surgiya Ilha joins Abeno's class, having moved from the Central Escaric dictatorship of South Mudan.

One day, the Supreme Leader of South Mudan suddenly disappears during a visit to Amphia. It is revealed that Ilha is actually the daughter of the Supreme Leader, and is to take over as the Supreme Leader of South Mudan while the authorities search for her missing father, though she will remain in school in Yamatai for her safety while her uncle carries out day-to-day government functions.

Shinzo is thrust into a world of misadventures as he attempts to navigate his student life while dealing with the advances of Yukino and Ilha, all while Ilha is constantly a target of foreign agents and the occasional international incident.

Characters

Abeno Shinzo

A 17 year old Junior College student. A gunji ota, he is obsessed with military hardware and knowledge, as well as Yamataian history.

Suga Yoshimoto

Yoshimoto, often called "Yoshi", is a 17 year old junior college student and has been Shinzo's best friend since secondary school. He is a math genius and is very active and hopes to be a politician in the future, but is terrible at sports. He is on the school's track and field team, but he rarely manages to pass a track meet without getting injured somehow.

Koike Yukino

A 17 year old Junior College student from an adjacent class. She has been Shinzo's next door neighbour and close friend since childhood. She is a member of the school's student council and is often annoyed by people standing too close to her, often telling people to move away from her with her catchphrase, "mitsu desu". This annoyance doesn't apply to Shinzo, who she secretly loves.

Surgiya Ilha

A 17 year old transfer student from the impoverished Central Escaric dictatorship of South Mudan. She is fluent in Yashiman because she is a douga otaku. Because nobody could pronounce her name in class, she calls herself Ira. It is later revealed that she is the daughter of the Supreme Leader of South Mudan, Surgiya Sholontu, and succeeds her father as the Supreme Leader following his sudden disappearance. She remains in Yamatai for her safety due to various power grabs occurring in her home country, with her uncle Surgiya Yelu carrying out day to day governance of the state in her absence.

Urgeci Ayako

A 23 year old half-Yamataian half-South Mudanese soldier of the 17th Special Forces Brigade, the elite bodyguards of the Surgiya family. She is sent to Yamatai to watch over and protect Ilha. Because it woule be illegal for South Mudanese troops to operate in Yamatai, she and her bodyguard force are disguised as maids and butlers.

Vandana Bhattacharya

The attractive 24 year old Prosecutor-General of the South Mudanese province of Pacchim Valley, which is invaded and secedes to the Eastern Union (a thinly-veiled reference to Arshavat) during an international incident. She is appointed the Governor-General of Pacchim by the Eastern Union government and is sent to Yamatai to negotiate with Ilha to defuse the international situation.

Keben Abahai

A youthful 22 year old North Mudanese diplomat who is sent to Yamatai to negotiate with Ilha the release of North Mudanese student who was arrested for spying on the South Mudan regime.

Garja Jakdan

Major-General Garja Jakdan is the commander of the National Reconnaissance Unit, the intelligence branch of South Mudan. He emerges as a primary antagonist of the series during the Coup Arc, which is also depicted in the last few episodes of the douga. Angered by the Surgiya dynasty's attempts at national reform, the purges of the hardliners in the military, and the dismantling of the nuclear program, General Garja orchestrates an elaborate coup attempt culminating in an attempt to launch a nuclear weapon to start a war that would leave him in control of South Mudan.

Surgiya Sholontu

The dictator of South Mudan, Supreme Leader Surgiya has been attempting to liberalise the country in recent years and normalise relations with the rest of the world. This was not received well by some elements of his government. He nonetheless cannot seem to escape the shadow of his father, Surgiya Sahaliyan, who was infamous around the world for being an absolutely crazy dictator who represented the worst excesses of well-armed rogue dictatorships in the modern day. At the start of the series, he disappears mysteriously while visiting Amphia, leaving Ilha in control of South Mudan.

South Mudan

The Republic of South Mudan is the main fictional country in the series. South Mudan is located in Central Escar, bordered by North Mudan, which is a rich monarchy that is officially neutral and has many aspects of Chisei and West Kuiju, though Chisei and West Kuiju do exist in the setting as a separate nation friendly to North Mudan. North and South Mudan are depicted to be located in what is the southern part of East Kuiju in the real world. Other than North Mudan, also bordering South Mudan are the Eastern Union and the Yue State, which are thinly-veiled representations of Arshavat and Liang, respectively.

South Mudan is a single-party dictatorship that is widely regarded as a rogue nuclear weapons state, making most of its income from illegal weapons sales and drug production, with very small legitimate mining and manufacturing industries. However, since taking over from his father in 2005, the new dictator Surgiya Sholontu has made great attempts at liberalising his country and normalising relations with other states, though he faces major resistance from members of his own government that seek to perpetuate the system for their own benefit. The first country to re-open formal diplomatic relations with South Mudan was Yamatai, which is why Ilha is sent to Yamatai for her protection.
