Emblem of the Yamataian Armed Forces

The Yamataian Armed Forces (Yashiman: 山都軍, Yamatai-gun) are the military service of Yamatai.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is the Prime Minister of Yamatai. The Armed Forces are divided into five services; the Army, Navy, Air Defence Force and Strategic Missile Force. They are controlled by the Ministry of Defence, with the Prime Minister as commander-in-chief.

As of 2016, the Yamataian Armed Forces number around 318,757 active troops and 101,900 reserve troops, the majority of which are Defence Force personnel and discharged former active-duty personnel. The Prime Minister may approve conscription in accordance with the Yamataian constitution.

History

Yamatai has had a long military history, with the warrior class occupying an important role in the social hierarchy throughout most of its existence. The first semblance of a Yamataian state military was created in Yamadou, where the Jimi priestesses, which also acted as government envoys, were protected by warrior monks that were dispatched from the capital alongside the priestesses. Following the collapse of Yamadou and the subsequent rise of feudal warfare in the Zuka period, warfare developed at a rapid pace, characterised by large bodies of conscripted peasant infantry supported by aristocratic archers and swordsmen. Cavalry would not be developed until much later, due to the low amount of horses on Akitsukuni at the time.

With the consolidation and rise of the new Empire of Yamatai in the 3rd century, the first proper state military was formed to subjugate the lands and to keep the feudal lords in check. In its early history, the Imperial Army was primarily used to combat rebels and enforce tax collection. A formalised and well-recorded system of conscription allowed the Imperial Army to be large, well-trained and disciplined, and they were also put to work carrying out engineering projects across the Empire. Military service became a rite of passage for the Yamataian peasantry, and gallant actions during service could potentially move one's family up the social ladder. However, most of the leadership positions were still reserved for nobles, who also took over the cavalry role as the conscript troops became increasingly skilled in archery and swordsmanship.

Subsequently, the centralised Yamataian military was instrumental in the Western Expedition in 750, a series of campaigns carried out against the five domains of Western Yashima by the Yamataian Empire. As the domains had largely relied on peasant militia and carried out warfare through single duels between champions, they were unaccustomed to the deployment of large amounts of troops in warfare, as well as the use of cavalry. This enabled Yamatai to defeat the Ito Domain quickly, seizing a foothold on Western Yashima that would enable their expansion over the western islands in the next centuries.
