Yuzu (柚子市) is a city in Hinomoto. Located in the south-west of Hinomoto island, Yuzu is located in the Hōen region, and is also the seat of the regional government of Hōen. Yuzu had a population of 871,878 as of 2016.

Inhabited since the 11th century, Yuzu was eventually developed into a port town under the Fukumura Shogunate through the merger of several villages and towns in the area. However, Yuzu only transformed into a major city after Hinomoto joined the Empire of Yamatai with the Treaty of Fujishima in 1867. Recognising the strategic and economic benefits of the town's natural deep harbour, the Yamataian government established the Port of Yuzu, and undertook extensive renovations to develop the city into an economic hub. Following the Second Escar-Varunan War and the Chiseian occupation of much of Hinomoto island, Yuzu became the heart of the Yamataian exclave on Hinomoto island, and was designated the capital of the Hinomoto Province. Following the handover of Hinomoto, the capital of Hinomoto was returned to Mikawa.

Yuzu is an important economic, political, and cultural centre on Hinomoto. The city mainly lies on hilly coastal lowlands, and enjoys a deep natural harbour that is crucial for international shipping.

Etymology

For several centuries, the Yuzu area has been home to Yuzu plantations considered to be of exceptional quality, giving the city its name. The Hōen Region alone accounts for 37% of all Yuzu fruit production in Yamatai.
